Canon unveils a new REBEL: Canon EOS 500D / Rebel T1i DSLR
By Needful Things
Woohoo!!! Canon is at it again. Despite the economic crisis gripping the entire planet, it has still managed to release a camera that might be worth all the dollars or pesos an avid cash strapped photgrapher can shell out. This new baby has the looks of a hybrid DSLR camera. It sports the new Canon Digic 4 processor that is reported to greatly enhace images far behind its rivals. Obviously, the target of Canon here are users who want something more of the Canon 450D and a little bit less of the Canon 50D. So let's see what makes this Canon 500D new... 1. It offers 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS Sensor. Now this suggests high quality prints and cropping options 2. Geez... a high ISO sensitivity of 3200 that is expandable to 12800. 3. The famous Digic 4 processor guaranteed to kick the hell out of Sony and Nikon :-) 4. Full HD 1080P video recording. A great feature but well if you need video then buy a video camera. But still... better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. 5. A 3.0" Clear View LCD screen. This is the same screen used in the uber camera 5D Mark II. Don't forget this is a live view sporting 920,000 dot count. 6. It boasts a burst shot of 3.4 frames per second. A far cry from som super zooms but hey it is taking images with DSLR quality. That's 170 JPEG images in a single burst. Can Niko beat that? Hmmm... I didn't think so. 7. It has its own integrated cleaning system 8. And of course Full compatibility with all Canon EF EF-S lenses A great Camera... eh? Not really that great if you ask me. Say, you have this camera and bring it near a waterfall. You happily click the day away. On the next couple of days it works fine... then suddenly it stops working. WHY? Because it it is now wet inside. The mist at the waterfall can get into the camera without you knowing it. Now take the DSLR's of Pentax. Say the Pentax K20D. Now that is a camera. It has a magnesium body and complete weather sealing. And at the price of the Canon 500D which is around 900USD. The bottom line here is that Canon has stuffed nice features into the 500D but it forgot to give an investment protection to the user (aside from the warranty). In the end, you cannot use the 500D in all situations. You can use a Pentax K20D in a pouring rain for a brief period... but never a 450D or a 500D. Even the Canon 50D cannot claim that. So add weather sealing to the 500D, a magnesium body and you tell me who I will kill to get one of them... |
