Entry Level Sony Alpha Series: Alpha 230, Alpha 330 and Alpha 380

By Needful Things

I have nothing against Sony. In fact I "swear" for now my loyalty with their Superzooms. But in the category of DSLRs, as much as I like their cameras, I tend to shun every new camera they make. I even advise friends and families and even you not to get a Sony DSLR. That is until now... and yet still with a certain amount of hesitance.

Perhaps Sony has realized that they are missing a cut in the pie of the entry level DSLR world. They have been producing ever since DSLR cameras and lenses whose prices can get you two cameras from the other manufacturers. Just the price of one of their primes can get you a fully equipped Canon 50D with all the basic accessories you can think of (that includes the bag). With a Sony DSLR... their is no Tokina or Sigma or other lenses... you're stuck with Sony lenses. That my friend is big big bummer in my book. Do you know that you can use a Canon or a Nikkor lens with a Pentax K20D? Yes you can 100%. If Sony can offer that kind of flexibility... then perhaps they can come up with a new winner.

Anyway, Sony released the new entry level Alpha Series of DSLRs, namely, (alpha) models DSLR-A380, DSLR-A330 and DSLR-A230). A new set of four "affordable" lenses and cute flash was also launched. These series of DSLRs are targeted to get the hearts of point-and-shoot people to move to DSLR photography. Come to think of it... it's like the Canon 300d all over again, but decades late. Very late.

Here are the things that might just put Sony on the entry level DSLR stream:

Simple and Caters to the Entry-Level Shooter: Sony claims that these cameras are very simple to use but retains that Sony performance and versatility. It does have a built in help system.

Light and Compact: The Alpha A230 is the lightest (10.2 megapixels), claimed to be the most compact in the Alpha line of DSLRs. The Alpha A330 at 10.2 megapixels and the Alpha 380 at 14.2 megapixels are also much lighter and compact than the Alpha A300/350. The built of this new DSLR's are designed for one handed operation.

Steady shot and Live View System: Sony's steady shot technology minimizes blur and the new live view system helps the photographer frame shots and at the same time avoiding the focus delay common to the other top cameras.

2.7 " Clear Photo LCD with tilt capability: The LCD of these new Alpha line are easy to view even in bright sunlight. And the tilting feature makes it easy for the photographer to get shots from difficult angles.

HDMI terminal Give the new Alphas the option to view the images captured in Sony's impressive line of Bravia televisions. Or any HDMI capable device.

Kit Lens It comes with different combination of the new lenses Sony released.

Here's the tentative pricing for each kit:

L series comes with SAL-1855 standard zoom lens
A380L - $850.00
A330L - $650.00
A230L - $550.00

Y series two-lens kit comes with both the SAL-1855 standard zoom and SAL-55200 telephoto zoom lenses.
A380Y - $1050.00
A330Y - $850.00
A230Y - $750.00

There you have it. Is the new line of Sony Alpha DSLR's worth it? I mean with the competition out there? Almost... just almost. For one, it falls down in my book by using a CCD sensor. It should have used its new Exmor technology. If it did well we have a strong contender here. another is that it uses again that propriety Memory Stick. As much as I love the Sony Superzooms, it really irks me that it uses this storage medium. we all now that other storage mediums are priced more fairly and sometimes outperforms the memory stick. The same goes with the lenses. It would seem that all the accessories for this DSLR's must come from Sony. Now if the prices were affordable to the masses... I have no complains.

So what do you think?
