Nikon's response to the Canon 500D: The All New NIKON D5000
By Needful Things
When the Canon Rebel 500D DSLR was released a few weeks ago, most photographers would have thought Nikon gave up on the mid-level DSLR race. Nikon was just biding its time allowing Canon to reveal its new DSLR contender. Perhaps the new D5000 is not really what is being offered right now. It could be a newer version based on their review of the 500D. Note that the current trend for DSLRs today revolve around bulking up or stripping down entry level models. Manufactures try to offer the best they can without compromising their professional models. Luring first-time DSLR owners is after all their ultimate goal. And what better way than to offer the best of both worlds: amateur and professional. Perhaps after reviewing the Canon 500D, Nikon soups up its beta D5000 to make it better. The 500D offers the best of the 450D and the 50D. From the paper specifications of the Nikon D5000... it sits somewhere between the D90 and the D60. Now the question is, what makes the Nikon DSLR D5000 tick better than the Canon 500D? 1. It boasts a 12.9 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor. A far cry from the Canon 500D but believed to be better in performance 2. An elegant 2.7" tilt and swivel LCD monitor 3. A sensor shake sensor cleaner 4. Iso range of 200-6400 (first the megapixel race now the ISO race) 5. 4 frames per second burst shot 6. 2nd generation Expeed processing core 7. Movie recording at 1280 x 720 with mono sound 8. Live view with an all new contrast detect AF... face detection, subject tracking... etc. 9. In camera retouching. (supposed to free you from your desktop photo editing application) 10. A connector for optional GPS unit that fits on the hot shoe 11. Increased battery life. (I hate battery grips, I feel like a cyborg with one) 12. 72 thumbnail and calendar view during playback So what do you think? Do these specifications beat the hell out of the Canon 500D? If you look closely at the specs of these Nikon D5000... you can clearly see the feeble attempt to make it a very juicy camera to beginners without really trying. A beginner would certainly find it very enticing. So would an amateur. I doubt if professional would look at it favorably. In my opinion... it is a very solid camera backed by the reputation of Nikon. But hey I also see the Canon 500D as a solid camera. Both have there strength and weaknesses. In the end the image captured wholly depends on the eye of the photographer. One finally note... it lacks weather sealing. I fervently hoped it would. A special note here is that if you like to have the lenses of both Canon and Nikon... you have to check out the Pentax K20D. The Pentax K20D is the only DSLR camera to feature weather sealing in the price range of the 500D and the D5000. It is also the only camera that can use the lenses of Canon and and Nikon. |
