PENTAX K-7: The Top DSLR Camera in the World
By Needful Things
I am a fan of Canon. Even Nikon for that matter. But it is only Pentax that has been able to staisfy the needs of professional and non-professional photographers. It was the K20D that sealed my love for the Pentax line of DSLRs. It was the only camera in the world that had a functional weather/environmental sealing. Up to now it was never matched by the top camera makers. Oh I know Canon release the 500D and Nikon the D5000... but both these DSLRs lack the punch to push the Pentax K20D out of its throne. In comes the K-7... it roughly pushes the Pentax K20D out of place. But then only a Pentax can rival a Pentax. Ok... what does the K-7 have under its belt that makes it better than the Pentx K20D. Let's not dwell on the body for it is the inside that counts. That is not to say that the K-7 body now exhuberates a sense of elegance most DSLRs are not capable of. Major specifications: * 720p/1080i HD video recording * Smaller magnesium/steel alloy body * Revised viewfinder (less magnified but with greater coverage) * Updated sensor with four-channel readout * 3.0" VGA (920,000 dot) LCD * New shutter mechanism with 1/8000th shutter speed * Faster continuous shooting (up to 5.2 fps) * 77 segment exposure metering sensor * Revised autofocus algorithms * AF illumination lamp * New dust removal system * HDMI output It is true that most professional photgraphers scorn those who use cameras with live view and video recording. But these breed of hardline "amateurs" are dying. If the current technology can include it on the camera without compromising anything... then why not. As my favorite saying goes - Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. :-) Take note of the "Smaller magnesium/steel alloy body". Majority of DLSRs released last year and this year are made of hard plastic with only the metal for the chasis. That tells a lot about the ruggedness of the Pentax K-7. And of course those features above implies a lot of things in terms of performance. Expect faster burst shots, less noise (sensor has four channels)... Here are the other little features every true blooded photographer wishes. * New dedicated ISO button * Distortion and chromatic aberration correction for DA and DFA lenses (also available in RAW conversion) * Adjustable dynamic range highlight and shadow correction * Three-shot in-camera HDR capture * Electronic level indicator * Composition adjustment (Uses the SR system to reposition the sensor to fine-tune composition) It would certainly appear that this DSLR camera very customizable. This time it is the camera that adapts to the needs of the shooter, not the other way around. Did I forget to mention that the Pentax K-7 is also cold resistant. Yep! you can use the Pentax K-7 at temperature of up to -10° C, making it ideal for use in any environment. Now let me know which camera can claim this? So now is the Pentax K-7 worth it? You bet your life it is.
