The first Canon CMOS Powershot: PowerShot SX1 IS
By Needful Things
Retired I am a huge fan of Superzooms. In fact I prefer it over a DSLR. Well of course, I also would go for a DSLR like say the Pentax K20D or the new Canon EOS 500D. Anyway, my first superzoom was a secondhand Canon S3IS. Next was a Sony Cybershot H9. Currently I wield a Sony Cybershot H50. For a brief time I have also used a Canon S5IS. I can attest to the power of the S5IS although it had minor improvements from the S3IS. Now Canon has come to its senses. Their superzooms were no match for those offered by Sony and Nikon not to mention those from Panasonic. So now they have release two of their first CMOS based superzooms. The Canon SX1 IS is a giant leap from its brothers. It has near DSLR quality and features that can go head to head with Nikon and Sony. Specifications: 1. 20x wide-angle (28mm, f/2.8) optical zoom with optical Image Stabilizer. It is quite shaky at the fullest zoom but the image stabilization makes up for everything. 2. 10.0 Megapixels. Canon CMOS sensor for full resolution continuous 4.0fps shooting. Quite slow if compared to the Niko P90 and Sony HX1... but not that this 4fps of images at full resolution. 3. Full HD (1080p, 30fps) movies plus HDMI output. I don't really think theHDMI is of big help but who cares. Since it is there... take advantage of it. 4. DIGIC 4, the new heart that gives this camera an edge. 5. Just like a DSLR, it has full manual control. 6. Great people shots with Face Detection AF/AE/FE/WB plus Face Select & Track and FaceSelf-Timer 7. Reduces blurring by as mush as 25% through High ISO Auto, optical Image Stabilizer, Motion Detection Technology and Servo AF 8. Auto Red-Eye Correction in shooting and playback 9. i-Contrast acts as night vision for dark areas. No need for flash 10. 2.8” widescreen vari-angle LCD II with wide viewing angle. Not as big as that of the Sony but the vari angle settings give a lot of flexibility for the shooter. 12. Customizable menu. Now this is one feature that puts it above the rest. Conclusion Well it is really hard to make a conclusion. The Sony EX1 can beat it so can the P90... but not in all areas. The Canon SX1 IS can hold its own against any superzoom or ultrazoom. It can even stand against entry level DSLRs. For the casual shooter, this camera is very recommended. If only weather sealing was included... |
